“All these
places may appear very different from one another, yet they have one crucial
thing in common: none of them were originally created as a home for
wildlife. Instead we designed and made
them for our own needs and requirements.
But in doing so we took them out of the farmed countryside, thus inadvertently
preventing them from being sprayed, mown and generally improved – an
agricultural euphemism which for wildlife, ironically, means the very opposite
of what it implies. So, without ever
meaning to we have created a huge chain of accidental nature reserves:
unplanned and unintended yet vital for the survival of all sorts of wild
creatures.”
My work is a
celebration of nature’s power to fight back and a plea for these places to be
left in peace.
